Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, or gastric sleeve, is a popular operation for weight loss surgery. In the fight against obesity and its related health complications, gastric sleeve surgery has emerged as one of the most effective and widely performed weight loss surgeries in Australia, and indeed, worldwide.

The BSR data on bariatric surgeries collected in 2023 shows of the 15,985 primary bariatric operations performed in Australia, 80 per cent of those procedures were laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy surgery. At Mackay & McLeod Weight Loss Surgeons, we’re proud to offer this life-changing procedure to help patients in Far North Queensland and beyond reclaim their health and quality of life.

How is a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy performed?

Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that permanently reduces the size of the stomach. Your stomach can typically expand to accommodate about 1-1.5 litres of liquid or food. The gastric sleeve operation removes the expansile segment of the stomach using a tissue stapling device. Approximately 70–80% of the stomach is removed, leaving behind a narrow, sleeve-shaped pouch of about 180mL.

This smaller stomach (around 180 mL) holds less food and also influences hormonal signals related to hunger, satiety, and blood sugar regulation. This helps patients eat less, feel fuller sooner, and improve or resolve conditions like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and sleep apnoea. The surgery is permanent, and importantly, irreversible.

Gastric sleeve is a laparoscopic (keyhole) procedure under general anaesthesia. The procedure involves removing the curved part of the stomach (the fundus and greater curvature). The procedure itself takes approximately 60–90 minutes. Most patients will stay in hospital one to two nights following the procedure.
